Willhelm Hallen Kunstfestival, Berlin 2024
Kaufhaus is a site-specific portrait of the Karstadt department store on Hermannplatz, Berlin. The image of the facade is inlaid with mosaic tiles and stones, highlighting the only surviving section of the original architecture. The building is both coming to life with its decorative glass and stone adornments, as well as decaying through the breakdown of the image resolution into mosaic pixels.
The ceramic still life is comprised of cast clay copies of items bought from within the department store, displaying the internal organs of the building as body. The final installation is an abstracted material portrait of a building that wishes to speak, and the uncertainty of the future of the department store as a social institution.
